I used to be a Christian (an evangelical, for what it's worth), but not any more. Now I am an Atheist. And a Skeptic. I say "Where's the evidence?", and "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence". One of my favourite saying has become known as Hitchen's Razor and it goes like this: "that which can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence".

For anyone who is interested in exactly what led me to my de-conversion, I am working on some detailed notes.

After several years of thought and discussion I have come to the conclusion that I have escaped from Christian fundamentalism, and that in doing so I have rejected all religions. I believe we must all seek the truth but we need to be wary about any people who claim to have found it. Very wary indeed. I did briefly consider changing to a more liberal kind of Christian but abandoned that when I couldn't find out what exactly they believe or why they believe it.

The kind of fundamentalism that I am talking about is based on a view of The Bible where several (supposed) attributes are asserted, specifically that it is:

  • inerrent
  • infallible
  • complete
  • sufficient
  • authoritative
A very common view that stems from these beliefs is Creationism.

Although I think most religion is characterized by intolerance I am pleased to say I know of one christian church which IMO is a shining example of tolerance, love and understanding, and that is Netherfield Chapel in Milton Keynes (England). Back in December 2008 I attended celebrated their 25th anniversary and a good time was had by all. If you are that way inclined I strongly recommend you pay them a visit one Sunday, they will be very pleased to see you!
